Sofia Airport → Rila Monastery
Bulgaria's largest and most iconic monastery
About Rila Monastery
Founded in the 10th century by the hermit St. Ivan of Rila, and rebuilt in its current form after an 1833 fire, Rila Monastery is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the single most visited monument in Bulgaria — for good reason. The courtyard is ringed by striped arches in vivid red, black and white, and the walls of the monastery church are covered floor to ceiling in dense, colourful frescoes depicting scenes of heaven, hell and everyday medieval life, painted by some of the leading Bulgarian artists of the National Revival period.
Beyond the main courtyard, a small museum holds Rafail's Cross, a tiny wooden crucifix carved with more than 1,500 miniature figures over twelve years of work, and the surrounding Rila National Park offers short walks along the Rilska River for those who want to extend the visit. Its combination of art, history and a genuinely dramatic mountain setting makes it an easy and rewarding half-day trip from Sofia.
