Sofia Airport → Melnik
Bulgaria's smallest town, famous for wine and sand pyramids
About Melnik
With a population of only a few hundred, Melnik holds the official title of Bulgaria's smallest town, tucked into a valley beneath dramatic sandstone pyramids sculpted by centuries of erosion into fins, towers and pale cliffs that glow orange at sunset. The town itself is just as striking: white Revival-era houses with overhanging upper floors line a single main street, many of them built directly above wine cellars carved deep into the soft rock.
Those cellars matter, because Melnik has been a serious wine town for centuries — its powerful, dark Shiroka Melnishka Losa red was reportedly a favourite of Winston Churchill, who is said to have kept a private stock. A short drive up into the hills, Rozhen Monastery adds a beautifully carved wooden iconostasis and sweeping valley views to a visit, making the Melnik–Rozhen combination one of the most rewarding half-day trips in the southwest of the country.
