Devil's Throat Cave, Trigrad Gorge & Yagodina Cave Day Trip
Bulgaria's most dramatic gorge and two of its finest show caves
Overview
This is our most adventurous day trip, heading deep into the central Rhodope Mountains to Trigrad Gorge, a narrow, sheer-walled canyon that ranks among the most dramatic in Bulgaria. From the gorge floor, a guided path leads into Devil's Throat Cave, descending toward the thunder of what's believed to be Europe's largest underground waterfall — a genuinely spine-tingling experience, and the source of no small amount of local legend about the entrance to the underworld.
After lunch at a local Rhodope restaurant, we visit Yagodina Cave, one of Bulgaria's longest and most richly decorated cave systems, with a guided walk through chambers of stalactites and stalagmites built up over hundreds of thousands of years. Between the driving, the walking and two full cave visits, this is a long day — but it covers ground few visitors to Bulgaria ever see.
