Koprivshtitsa Historic Village Day Trip
A living open-air museum of Bulgarian Revival architecture
Overview
Koprivshtitsa grew wealthy in the 18th and 19th centuries on the livestock and craft trade, and its merchants built some of the finest National Revival houses anywhere in Bulgaria — brightly painted, timber-framed mansions with carved ceilings, more than 380 of which are individually protected today. Cobbled lanes and small stone bridges over the Byala Reka stream complete a town that feels genuinely frozen in the 1800s.
It's also a place of real historical weight: the April Uprising of 1876 against Ottoman rule broke out here, and several of the grand merchant houses are now preserved as museums dedicated to the revolutionaries who lived in them. We keep this trip to a relaxed half day, with time to wander the streets, visit a museum house, and enjoy lunch at a traditional local restaurant before heading back to Sofia.
