Belogradchik Rocks & Magura Cave Day Trip
200-metre red rock towers and prehistoric cave paintings
Overview
The Belogradchik Rocks are a scattered forest of red and orange sandstone towers, some up to 200 metres tall, shaped over roughly 200 million years and woven together with the 19th-century Kaleto Fortress, which was cleverly built to use the rock formations as natural walls. Walking among them — and up onto the fortress ramparts for the best views — feels like stepping into a landscape that shouldn't really exist in this part of Europe.
After lunch, we continue to Magura Cave, a vast limestone cavern whose walls carry rare prehistoric paintings made from bat guano some 8,000 years ago — among the oldest surviving art of their kind found anywhere on the continent. It's a long day on the road, but the combination of dramatic geology and genuine prehistoric art makes it one of our most memorable trips.
